Javonti’s Reflection: “As I reflect on the first half of my internship at United Way Galveston County Mainland, I am incredibly grateful for the wide range of experiences that have helped shape my professional development and deepen my understanding of community-based work. From day one, I was welcomed by a passionate and dedicated team that consistently leads by example in making a meaningful impact in the community.

One of the highlights of my experience has been visiting various partner agencies and working alongside the team during the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. These visits gave me a firsthand look at how United Way collaborates with local organizations to provide valuable resources and support to individuals and families. It was inspiring to witness the teamwork and commitment that goes into making these services accessible and effective. I also had the opportunity to attend a career fair at Hitchcock High School, where I was able to speak with students about United Way’s mission and the many ways the organization contributes to the well-being of the community. Being able to connect with young people and share insights into nonprofit work was both rewarding and eye-opening, as it highlighted the importance of outreach and education in inspiring future community leaders.

Another significant part of my internship involved working closely with the Program Director in planning the upcoming summer educational camp. From developing ideas to coordinating activities and reaching out to community members for support, this part of my internship helped me grow in so many ways! It also taught me the importance of building strong, trusting relationships to ensure the success of community programs. Throughout my time at United Way Galveston County Mainland, I’ve grown both personally and professionally. I’ve learned the value of collaboration, adaptability, and purpose-driven work. The support and mentorship I’ve received from the team have been invaluable, and I’ve enjoyed being a part of such a passionate and mission-focused organization. I’ve truly enjoyed working with the team here and I’m excited to continue my journey in the second half of my internship. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together and how much more I’ll continue to learn and grow along the way.”
