Genevieve Bacak McGarvey was born in Youngstown, Ohio and graduated from Youngstown State University. After moving to Texas, she earned her law degree from the University of Houston Law Center. Since 1988 Genevieve has worked at the law firm of McLeod, Alexander, Powel (MAPA) in Galveston where she became the firm’s first female partner.
During her time at MAPA, Genevieve has worked with a diversity of clients ranging from managing complex litigation for Fortune 500 companies to representing the indigent. Also, as a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator, Genevieve has mediated hundreds of cases, allowing parties to resolve their issues and avoid the financial and emotional costs of trial and appeal.
In addition, Genevieve serves the court as Attorney and Guardian Ad Litem as well as Amicus Attorney for civil, family and probate cases.
Genevieve is admitted to practice law in the State of Texas as well as the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Genevieve is the Panel Chair for the District 5 Grievance Committee of the State Bar of Texas. She also served on the Justice Forward Inaugural Galveston Advisory Committee.
In addition to her work as an attorney, Genevieve volunteers tirelessly for local causes such as the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center, Independence Village, as well her church where she has served as a lector and eucharistic minister and on the festival committee. While serving with the Texas City/ La Marque Chamber of Commerce, she was awarded the Shining Star Award.
Genevieve is married to William (Bill) McGarvey and is mother of one child, Stephen, and two stepchildren, Melissa and James.
